Obama Calls For Imus's Firing

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has every right to want Don Imus fired for the extremely racist remarks he made on the air; Obama was also upset because the remarks furthered a very racist stereotype of black female athletes. He said later in the interview that he wants his daughters to grow up in a world were they can play basketball without being held down by derogatory stereotypes, “He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting (Obama, Barack).” Now Obama has the right to be pissed but what about the first amendment rights that all Americans have doesn’t that count for anything? The other thing that didn’t seem right was that Obama wanted the people to find a way to stop intoxicating our kids with this filth, there is no way to do that eventually someone is going to teach them its just how life goes. Some might say its an important part of becoming an adult, learning these things young so that as you grow you will grow up with the knowledge of what is right form what is wrong. Lastly what really didn’t sit kosher with me was Obama’s statement about how he wants his daughters to be athletes…to me that seems like he is furthering another negative stereotype himself.

Even though the first amendmant says that everyone has the right to be free speach, it doesn't mean they should go around publiclly degrading people different than that of themselves. I feel that Obama did the right thing because he is in the position where he should stand up for what was said, that could offend somebody very much. If no one stood up for themselves when racist things like this were said, then where would our country be today. If you are in a position of higher power and somoene speaks out against you and your people you have the exact right as him to speak back, and if he did not than the person who said the wrong things might not even have realized the extent of what he said was wrong.
